History
Blue Valley Christian Church began in January, 1982 as the Christian Church in Stanley, a mission church established by The Christian Church of Greater Kansas City (Disciples of Christ) and supported by sister congregations. It met in Stanley Elementary School. In 1985, BVCC was transformed by three events: calling its first full-time minister; relocating to Valley Park Elementary School, located at the southeast corner of 123rd and Lamar in Overland Park, Kansas; and purchasing 4.7 acres of land at the northeast corner of 123rd and Lamar. Blue Valley Christian Church was officially chartered on Pentecost Sunday, 1988. BVCC built a chapel-size church with fellowship hall and began worship in its new facility in September, 1992.
The
church was expanded in 2001 to accommodate additional educational and
mission facilities. In 2005, BVCC began a discernment process to seek
God’s desire. It resulted in a challenging transformation: to
become a church defined by mission; to claim its identity as a mission
connection center; and to reorganize in an adaptive way that is more
inclusive and more reflective of a mission and ministry-based culture.
The Blue Valley Christian Church story is a journey marked by God’s unceasing love and grace. It is a chronicle of followers of the Christ earnestly seeking to do His will and His work; of gathered people who face challenge, opportunity, pain and joy with a sense of community; of God’s people providing sanctuary, hope and healing to those in need of rest and recovery; of a laity and a pastorate sharing the responsibility of leadership, mission and ministry.
